Where do i start?

The question I get asked the most about painting is where do I start?

The best advice i can give is to get yourself some basic materials, brushes, canvas, paints and a few jam jars. I have been painting professionally for over 20 years now, and have always specialised in oils but I can give advice on most mediums.

So over the next few weeks I’ll start from the beginning! Materials are so important, you will have to choose a medium and brushes so lets get you started. I love a Vincent Van Gogh quote “If you can hear a voice within you say,’you can’t paint’ then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced”

This week I’ll tell you about brushes.  I have hundreds but usually stick to just one or two, you don’t have to spend lots of money but you do need to buy the right ones for your medium.  I use flat brushes that hold oil paint, for watercolour and acrylic you might want softer brushes and for glazing (we will cover this later) you will need even softer brushes. The shape determine the strokes or marks you want to make on the canvas.  Its always best to try and buy your brushes from an art shop so you can see and feel them, but if you want to buy online websites such as artdiscount.com and greatart.com sell great brushes at affordable prices.

Next time I’ll show you how to choose a canvas and in later weeks I will demonstrate how to use your brushes when we get started!!
